From the Arctic to Antarctica

At the Plaza Islas Malvinas, pass by the bronze mural that stands as a memorial to Argentinian soldiers who died in the Falklands War and see the Old Cemetery. Continue your journey past the Old Airport, where you may pause for an optional walk to take photographs at this iconic landmark. Next, head to the Old Prison of Ushuaia, which occupies remnants of the old presidio. The city’s remoteness made it an ideal location for a prison, and the first inmates arrived in 1896. Designed to hold 380 prisoners, its cramped cells housed 800 by the time of its closing in 1947. Enjoy a guided tour of the museum before returning to the ship.

Take a panoramic drive through the stunning natural beauty of Tierra del Fuego National Park. This 150,000-acre park—Argentina’s first shoreline national park—stretches north from Beagle Channel along the Chilean border to beyond Lake Fagnano in the north. The park’s diverse landscape encompasses lush forests, wildflower-filled meadows and snowcapped mountain peaks, while pale-gray trunks from trees damaged by long-ago fires stand in stark contrast to the green landscape around them. Peat bogs are also found extensively throughout the park. Learn about how park wardens work to keep the delicate balance of the ecosystem, including controlling invasive species. During your tour, you will stop at Panoramic Point, Roca Lake and—following lunch—Lapataia Bay for an opportunity to take photographs of rugged mountains mirrored in silver lakes surrounded by verdant fauna.

Journey into the awe-inspiring beauty of the Patagonian wilderness on a hike with Siberian Huskies. Take a scenic drive to the north side of Tierra del Fuego, admiring the stunning vistas of lakes, forests, glaciers and more as you cross the Fuegian Andes. Upon arrival at the trailhead, meet your guide and friendly huskies, then set out on foot toward the Tierra Mayor Valley, stopping at panoramic viewpoints as you hike through majestic landscapes. Follow the old lumberjack trails with your canine companions, passing through dense forests of lenga and ñire trees. Following your hike, savor the delicious taste of Argentinian meat at the Dome. Then, journey into the mountainous region, witnessing the massive peaks and primitive forest while climbing up the Garibaldi Pass. At the highest point, you will see Lake Escondido in the distance. Your tour will end back at your ship.

Cast a line and test your luck during an unforgettable fishing expedition into the heart of Tierra del Fuego. The waters of the lakes, rivers and streams of southern Argentina are home to a variety of fish, including the sought-after Patagonian salmon. You will travel north to the remote Escondido Lake, or “hidden lake,” an idyllic location surrounded by dense forests and steep mountain ranges at 3,200 feet above sea level. Upon arrival, you will receive your fishing gear and discover the methods used by your experienced guide to capture Patagonian salmon, as well as rainbow, brown, and brook trout. From the shore, try your hand at either fly-fishing or spin fishing. If you are lucky, your patience will be rewarded with a prize catch. Photograph yourself with your trophy before releasing it back into the wild. At the end of your excursion, you will return to your ship.

Explore the “End of the World” as you traverse the Lapataia River and hike through Tierra del Fuego National Park. Depart your ship and journey by motor coach into the heart of the park, where you will meet your guide at the river and listen to a short safety briefing. Then, receive your equipment and set out onto the water. Take in the views of sub-Antarctic beech forests, peat bogs and marshes as you paddle along the shoreline, and keep watch for sightings of local birdlife including steamer ducks, cormorants and seagulls. After, return to shore and embark on a trek along tree-lined trails to discover the park from a different perspective. Your guide will share insights into the surrounding ecosystem, the history of the park and the wildlife that make their homes here. Cap your day with refreshments while you soak up the beauty of your surroundings, then return to your ship.
