Eastport, Maine, United States

  • Scenic lighthouse by rocky coastal shore

Eastport, situated on Moose Island and overlooking the Bay of Fundy, is the easternmost city in the US. Settled around 1780, the town was captured by the British during the War of 1812 and was not returned to the US until the Treaty of Ghent in 1818. During the 19th century, Eastport was a prominent shipping port; fishing, as well as aquaculture, remains a major part of the local economy to the present day. Nearby Old Sow is one of the world’s largest tidal whirlpools and the offshore waters are home to an array of marine life, including whales, seals and dolphins.
