About Cádiz

Cadiz, Spain

A former Moorish capital, this port city still has echoes of the medieval Muslim influence in its architectural treasures. Make a stop at the Torre Tavira tower that was once used by merchants to look out to sea for their ships returning to port, while today it is home to a camera obscura that provides a panoramic view of the city and the bay. The gold dome and Baroque façade of the elaborate cathedral reflects the wealth that once poured through this city from the New World. The wealth of the city grew during the 18th century as the river to nearby Seville silted up, and the port began to monopolize the import of gold and silver from the Americas.
