The resident pods of Orcas' in the San Juan Islands offer one of the world's best research and recreational viewing opportunities! Imagine a day searching for them......

GUIDING PHILOSOPHY AT VIKING CRUISES...
We are committed to an insightful, safe, and fun-loving nature experience. This extends to our belief and actions taken to minimize impact to all wildlife and environment. We hold a deep love and reverence for all the wildlife we encounter as well as the environment they live in. Please join us in sharing the beauty and living in harmony with nature!

OUR ADVENTURE...
Throughout May to October, the San Juan Islands and vicinity is the home, playground and feeding grounds for the 3 pods (J,K,&L) of Orca Whales that comprise the Southern Residents. Within these pods, there are 75 – 90 individuals with small variance from year to year. Additionally, transients from outside the region may be seen in the area. During our "Nature Search" we will have the opportunity to view lots of the diverse wildlife residing or visiting this beautiful region including; Orca, Minke, and Gray whales; Dalls and Harbor Porpoise; Stellar and California Sea Lions; and Harbor Seals; Migratory and resident bird populations. All the while, our on-board naturalist(s) will be telling you about the cultural and natural history of this incredible region.
THE VIKING STAR...
Your nature tour will be aboard the well-known Viking Star, a 49 passenger vessel that has been plying Northwest waters for over 20 years. Viking Star was custom built especially for touring adventures and many naturalists consider it the best boat in the Northwest with its combinations of inside/outside viewing, comfort, and stability. Fully enclosed and heated cabins feature 31 large windows for those that prefer inside viewing. Up to a dozen people may join the "skipper" in the spacious wheelhouse. Outside decks are exceptionally large for many people to enjoy outside viewing.

Our on-board library includes books on nature and island history, research guides, whale and bird field guides with ID information. We also have several pairs of binoculars for use aboard the Viking Star. Our naturalist and crew will help to identify the different wildlife we encounter as well as provide on-going narration on the islands' natural and cultural history.
